About us

The European Centre for Media Competence (ecmc) was incorporated in 1997 and was based in Marl, Germany. The overall business objective of the European Centre for Media Competence (ecmc) GmbH was the promotion of media literacy and the corresponding advisory service at a political level. Different target groups were addressed with a wide variety of digital media projects in order to highlight the opportunities of new media for all sections of the population, thereby contributing to the concept of a general digital access.

ecmc's projects, publications and workshops aimed at stimulating the dialogue on life and work in the information society. Concepts and materials for media work and education were designed to enhance the target groups' media literacy skills and to prevent a digital divide in society. Some topical illustrations of projects developed and executed by ecmc are mekonet, the NRW Media Competence Network, NRW denkt nach(haltig) and media NRW.

ecmc worked with an experienced and interdisciplinary team in the domains of:

  • analysis & development
  • consultancy & management and
  • online communication

In 2010, ecmc and the Adolf Grimme Institute in Marl merged and now operate as one organistaion under the new name Grimme Institute. The shareholders of Grimme Institute are the German Adult Education Association (DVV), the West German Broadcasting (WDR), the Second German Television (ZDF), the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Film Foundation NRW, the City of Marl and the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia.
